Acoustic Guitar - 21 Day Challenge

I've decided to take up guitar (semi-seriously) and have decided to participate in the 21 day challenge on Ultimate Guitar.com. I will be using this blog to document my progress and hopefully look back one day and recall how hard it was to start playing guitar.

Now a few notes about the "challenge". The 21 day challenge involves playing a song for 21 days at a really slow pace without a single mistake. The theory behind it is that playing a piece perfectly at a slow pace will condition your muscle memory to remember the correct movements, as you will not be playing the mistakes over and over again. According to scientists (as per the forum post), 21 days is the magic number where your subconscious takes over and it becomes a habit. Now the only problem is sticking it out for the entire 21 days. Being afflicted with a mild case of ADHD, I have my concerns.

The song I picked is Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven". I was told that it is a relatively easy song to play for beginners, minus the hammer-on and pull-0ff sequence. Today is day 2. I have practiced for about an hour and a half and my fingers are sore, not to mention black and bruised. I'm glad I stuck with it but I didn't feel like I made much progress. Probably because my ADHD kicked in and broke my concentration. I broke the routine and started playing the song at normal speed. I'm thinking of skipping tomorrow since it will be New Years eve and maybe it'll give my fingers a bit of time to rest ... and return to their original colour.

Till next time ...
